Composer Feature: Judith Shatin
This week, we feature acclaimed composer Judith Shatin
Judith Shatin is praised as "highly inventive on every level" by the Washington Post. Known for spanning both the acoustic and digital realm, she has been commissioned by major organizations such as Carnegie Hall and Library of Congress. In addition, her work has been performed with acclaimed ensembles, including Atar Piano Trio, Kronos Quartet, Da Capo Chamber Players, and the Juventas New Music Ensemble.
As a composer in high demand, Judith would like to share two recent premieres.
The first, titled Floes, was a multimedia piece collaboration with Artist SoHyun Bae and choreographer Virginie Mécène. It premiered March 18-19 at the Martha Graham Studio Theater.

The second premiere was another collaboration, Strike From Immigrant, also in partnership with Virginie Mécène, who reimagined one of Maratha Graham’s lost dances of the same name. Shatin worked to recast music from her piece "Adventure on Mt. Hehuan" for solo bass drum and optional interactive electronics. It premiered on the Graham season titled "Dances of the Mind" at the Joyce Theatre, with performances on April 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 13th.

A piece Judith would like to share is "Adventure on Mt. Hehuan", which was written for ace percussionist I-Jen Fang. Scored for bass drum and optional interactiveelectronics, the piece is dedicated to Ms. Fang, with whom Shatin long studied percussion. Shatin says the piece "speaks to the joy in the journey of timbral exploration and to its role in musical design." The premiere is linked HERE.
