Composer Feature: Alexander Tovar

It’s almost the long weekend! This Friday, we spotlight composer alum Alexander Tovar!

Holding a degree from USC, Alexander Tovar has collaborated with renowned artists such as Philip Glass, Gustavo Dudamel, Van Dyke Parks, Nico Muhly, and Elton John. A Los Angeles native, Alexander has enjoyed a career in filmmaking and film scoring. His film ‘Show Business’ won best music at the Milan Film Festival. His other film,‘Nothing in Los Angeles’, won a total of seven awards combined from the Route 66 Film Festival, Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival, and more.

Alongside his own films, Alexander has written for many film and television series. His score to ‘the Crown Prince of Heaven’ was featured at the prestigious Cannes film festival. In addition to his film scores, he has composed a symphony and a string quartet, with more chamber music to come.

In recent news, Alexander enjoyed a sold-out performance of his original live score for Dziga Vertov’s iconic film, ‘Man with a Movie Camera’. His first string quartet was premiered this fall at UCLA by the Aris Quartet, and The Arcis Saxophon Quartett will also be premiering a new piece he wrote for them.
