Juventas New Music Ensemble presents

Sounds of New England

April 21, 2025

The ensemble’s program features music inspired by treasured places across the region on May 4, 2025 at First Parish, Sudbury.

Boston | After three sold-out performances at the New England Botanic Garden, Juventas’s Sounds of New England program returns. The concert features the works of five living composers: Stacy Garrop, Juventas Artistic Director Oliver Caplan, Rachel Panitch, Jason Cain, and Gwyneth Walker. It will be presented on May 4, 4pm at the First Parish in Sudbury, MA.

Sounds of New England celebrates the region’s unique beauty, taking the audience on an auditory journey through its landscapes and landmarks. Each piece is inspired by a distinct location, capturing the essence of New England through music. This performance is the finale to Juventas's first-ever Sudbury concert series, part of the ensemble's work to reach more communities by expanding beyond Boston's urban core.

Beacon of the Bay by Stacy Garrop is inspired by the Castle Hill lighthouse whose ruby light brings ships safely through Narragansett Bay; Oliver Caplan’s In the Direction of Dreams celebrates trails alongside Walden Pond; Sand and Snow by Rachel Panitch was written during the composer’s residency at Acadia National Park; Granite Peaks at Sunset by Call for Scores Winner Jason Cain invokes the composer’s childhood memories of hikes in the White Mountains; and Craftsbury Trio by Gwyneth Walker takes inspiration from the town of Craftsbury, Vermont.

“New England is a region unlike any other - its mountains, coasts, and forests tell stories to those who listen” says Artistic Director Oliver Caplan. “This program invites the audience to hear those stories through music written by living composers who have deep connections to this corner of the world we call home.”

Sounds of New England will feature performances by Celine Ferro, Julia Scott Carey, Ryan Shannon, and Matthew Smith.
