ANNE HOWARTH:

CENTER STAGE

Featuring Juventas’s celebrated Hornist, with contemporary music inspired by water

January 9, 2024

Juventas New Music Ensemble begins the new year with Anne Howarth: Center Stage, a special solo program featuring Juventas’s celebrated Hornist. The concert includes three world premieres by Judith Shatin, Justin Casinghino and Oliver Caplan; plus works by Catherine Likhuta, Wayne Lu, and Althea Talbot-Howard. Performances will be on January 27 at 8pm in the Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge (and live-streamed on YouTube) and February 3 at 8pm at First Parish Sudbury, MA.

“Like an all-star baseball team, each of Juventas’s ensemble members is an incredible talent in their own right,” says Juventas Artistic Director Oliver Caplan. “Our annual Center Stage program features one of Juventas’s ten core ensemble members in a special solo concert. Anne is one of Boston’s most beloved Hornists, known both for her incredible virtuosity, and for a deep understanding for music’s power to bring people together.”

The program’s centerpiece is Canta la Sal by Virginia-based composer Judith Shatin, scored for horn, cello and piano. The work is inspired by Pablo Neruda’s Oda a la Sal. “Neruda speaks eloquently of the singing of salt on the flats, the mountain of buried light in the mines, the transparent cathedral, the crystal of the sea, and the wonders of its flavor,” says Shatin. “These images and metaphors inspired the harmonic, rhythmic and timbral trajectories of the trio.” The piece was co-commissioned by Juventas with Anne Howarth, the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and the International Horn Society.

Anne Howarth: Center Stage will feature performances by hornist Anne Howarth, cellist Thomas Barth, and pianist Julia Scott Carey.

Tickets are on sale now at juventasmusic.org and range from $1-$35. Juventas continues to provide $1 Music for All tickets for anyone who cannot afford regular ticket pricing, no questions asked. Info at https://www.juventasmusic.org/anne-howarth-center-stage
